ZOOMit is currently enabled for DWI, BOLD and T2 SPACE 3D imaging. 3D imaging like MSK, spine or brain profits the most from the ZOOMit induced scan time reduction. Diffusion based imaging profits from the significantly increased image quality.

High-quality diffusion-weighted imaging

Quality of DWI is especially crucial when this technique is used for the
detection of smallest lesions of high susceptibility (e.g.skull base, spine, abdomen, pelvis), or when quantification of diffusion restriction is required.

ZOOMit gives exactly that:
Significantly increased image quality in the area of interest. In this example of an MR diffusion in the prostate, the zoomed images have much less distortion and better delineation of tumor borders.

Technical Details:

It is a well-known phenomenon in MR imaging that if the field-of-view (FOV) is smaller than the object, aliasing (foldover artifacts) will occur. This is not an issue in the readout direction, since it can be overcome by frequency oversampling. But oversampling in the phase-encoding direction comes at a cost: longer scan times. This makes the use of phase oversampling unfavorable or impossible in many cases.

With ZOOMit, similar to an optical zoom of a camera, only a reduced FOV in phase-encoding direction (‘stripe’) is excited (see figure below). Consequently, there will be no signal from the non-excited regions and only the small stripe needs to be encoded.
The result: Acquisition time can be reduced while maintaining spatial resolution, or the spatial resolution can be increased - or a combination thereof.

TimTX TrueShape

ZOOMit is based on TimTX TrueShape, Siemens’ architecture for parallel transmit (pTX) technology. This technology uses two indepedent transmit channels for fully dynamic RF excitation. Only TimTX TrueShape and ZOOMit together provide selective excitation within a user specified FoV. TimTX TrueShape is designed to break ground for a broad range of new MRI applications. ZOOMit is the first TrueShape application.
